Racial Genocide: Why Columbus Day Should Not Be Celebrated

Columbus Day has been celebrated by Americans for years. I was brought up believing that Columbus Day was a great American hero. It was confusing to me why other countries celebrate the day of indiginous peoples’s birthday instead of Columbus Day. Since moving to the Morongo reserve, I’ve become more knowledgeable about the fact Americans don’t honor a hero. Instead, we celebrate the man responsible for rasict violence. I was curious as to why we have an annual holiday in honor of a man that tortured, raped and murdered Native Americans. I was curious to learn more about Christopher Columbus. Why is it that we are taught songs about Columbus and not the truth? I am one of the indiginous people who think Columbus is a fraud. He arrived in Latin America initially to seek a new route to India. He landed in Latin America knowing it and tricked his crew mates into believing he was in India. This would prove to be disastrous and he would likely die. He then went to Native Americans and stole their land and everything. Columbus and his crew brought other horrors to Native Americans. The “new world” was ravaged by disease, which led to a drop in native population. Columbus elected himself as the “governor” of the settlement. This power was not granted to Spain’s monarchs. He established inhumane rules that eventually led to his killing of his own settlers. Queen Isabella and Columbus were so upset that they sent him back to Spain in chains. How could he be so heroic? Absolutely nothing. There is nothing to be applauded. National holidays should only be given to those who are truly entitled. Christopher Columbus actually crossed the Atlantic Ocean but never reached North America. A land you have not known for centuries is impossible to find. Columbus also killed and made slaves. Although Columbus may have opened the world to the West and East forever, the human suffering he caused has lasting and real consequences. If Christopher Columbus had been alive today, his crimes against humanity would have been brought to light.
