Eddie Van Halen’s Biography: Hard Rock Star

After Eddie Van Halen, the guitarist, was hospitalized with a stomach disorder and had to be postponed, Van Halen opened the first Japan tour since 1995 at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, Nagoya.

Van Halen is an American hard-rock band that was formed in Pasadena in 1972. From 1974 to 1985, the band consisted of Eddie Van Halen as guitarist, David Lee Roth as vocalist, Alex Van Halen as drummer, and Michael Anthony in bass. Sammy Hagar was appointed vocalist to replace David Lee Roth. Fans and critics both consider Van Halen’s debut album in 1978 to be the most influential and groundbreaking rock and pop album of all time.

They continued to be a successful band and were still one of the top rock bands of the 1980s. Their greatest success was 1984, released the same year that the album’s name. Their biggest hit single, Jump, was an international success. In 1985, ex-Montrose singer Sammy Hagar was the lead singer. In 11 years, the band released four US Number One albums under Sammy Hagar. The band was disbanded by Hagar in 1996 just before Best Of Volume I was released. Gary Cherone, ex-Extreme frontman was quickly recruited to take over as the lead singer and Van Halen III came out in 1998. Cherone quit Van Halen in frustration following the tour in 1999 due to poor album sales. Van Halen went into hiatus in 1999 and then reunited with Hagar for an international tour in 2003. The Best of Both Worlds, the second greatest hits album by Van Halen, was released in 2003. The Best of Both Worlds was a compilation of material from both Hagar and Roth eras. It curiously didn’t include any Cherone songs. Three new tracks were added by the band, two of them singles. Sammy Hagar left Van Halen again in 2005. In 2006, David Lee Roth took over as the lead vocalist on their highest-grossing tour ever, and one that was also among the most lucrative tours of 2006. Michael Anthony, Eddie’s only son, was not invited to take part in the tour. The band’s 2012 album, A Different Kind of Truth was a critical and commercial success. Roth was the lead singer. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) claims Van Halen is 19th best-selling artist/band in America with 56 million albums sold in the U.S. alone and 75 millions worldwide. They also ranked 4th on Billboard’s 2013 top money-makers list. Van Halen was also ranked number 4 on the Billboard’s top money makers list in 2013. Van Halen’s many hits and large-than-life performances on stage made them famous worldwide. Unfortunately, the band also became well-known for drama surrounding former members leaving. After the departure of the three former frontmen Sammy Hagar (David Lee Roth), Gary Cherone caused controversy. The controversy included many contradictory press statements. Van Halen were elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. For their 1992 album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge they won the grammy for “Best Hard Rock Performance”. They were nominated for four additional grammy awards and have been nominated several times. VH1 listed them as the 7th most popular hard rock artist of all time. Their debut album was 415th on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. 1984 was number 81 and 91 on the list of the 100 Best Albums of the Eighties.
