Putting Your Index After Your Endnotes

You may be wondering how to arrange the elements in your document. Word, as an example, allows users to add various elements including tables of materials, special table, footnotes or endnotes. If you have both an index and endnotes, you may be wondering where to put the index.

Word gives you the option to place your endnotes at the end or section of a document. It is clear that you don't want to place the endnotes in the document at the very end if your index should appear right after them. Add a "next-page" section break just before your index and after the document's body. You should have two sections in your document: one for body text and the other for index. The endnotes should be formatted in the body of your document to appear at section's end. Follow these steps to do this:

As displayed in Figure 1. The Footnotes and Endnotes dialog box.

  1. The insertion point should be placed in the body of the document, the section containing your endnotes.
  2. The References tab should be visible.
  3. Click on the small icon in the footnotes group. Word opens the Footnotes and Endnotes dialog box.
  4. Endnotes: Click on the radio-button. Click the Endnotes radio button.
  5. Choose End of Section using the list below the Endnotes radiobutton.
  6. Click on the Apply button.
  7. Close the Footnotes & Endnotes dialog by clicking Cancel.

When you choose Word to place your endnotes, it will automatically do so.

You may not get the results you want if you have already used multiple sections. Nevertheless, you are free to put the endnotes in any place that you wish.

As shown in Figure 2. The Layout tab in the Page Setup dialogue box.

  1. Just before the index, insert a "next pages" section break.
  2. The References button should be displayed.
  3. Click on the small icon in the footnotes group. Word opens the Footnotes and Endnotes dialog box.
  4. Endnotes can be selected by clicking the radio button.
  5. Using the radio button Endnotes, select End of Section.
  6. Select Continuous from the drop-down list for Numbering.
  7. Select the entire document from the drop-down menu for Apply Changes to.
  8. Click on the Apply button.
  9. Close the Footnotes & Endnotes dialog by clicking Cancel.
  10. The Page Layout ribbon tab is displayed.
  11. Click on the small icon in the lower-right corner of the Page Setup group. Word opens up the Page Setup Dialog Box.
  12. The Layout tab should be selected. As shown in Figure 2.
  13. Suppress Endnotes is the checkbox to select. The check box can only be accessed if there are endnotes within your document.
  14. Select the entire document from the drop-down menu.
  15. Click OK.
  16. Position the insertion marker in the next section after the index. Put it after the section where you want endnotes.
  17. The Page Layout ribbon tab is displayed.
  18. Click the small icon to the right-bottom corner of Page Setup. Word opens the Page Setup dialog.
  19. Select the Layout option.
  20. Suppress Endnotes: Uncheck this box.
  21. Select This Section from the drop-down menu.
  22. Click OK.

Word now suppresses all endnotes except for the section you specify (in steps 16 & 21), so that all of your endnotes will appear just before your index.
