Diwali in America

Celebrate Bigger with More Celebrations

Why Diwali falls in October in America

Since the beginning of the 19th century, diasporic Indian communities have formed in the United States. There are currently 3.1 million Indian Americans in the United States, making them the largest immigrant community. In addition to their cultural and traditional traditions, they also brought the celebration of Diwali or the Hindu Festival of Lights, with them. Diwali, which falls this year on November 7, is celebrated by the Indian communities in the U.S. much earlier than that. There are good reasons for their actions. Quartz India, an Indian business news website, reported this.

Diwali in AmericaDuring Diwali Hindus visit their temples and pay their respects to goddess Lakshmi. After completing their religious practices in the temples all Hindus would go to melas for Diwali trinkets. This included their diyas lamps (oil-wick), puja materials, aarthi book (prayer), and food. Neenah, a Hindu living in Long Island, New York said that these items used to be sold in small Indian shops in Flushing and Hicksville, New York. There are now stores such as Patel Brothers and Usha Foods scattered throughout the country. It is now easier to purchase Indian products.

Booking a puja priest is no different. Puja N Punjari allows users to book a Priest quickly. Sadly, Puja N Punjari users are sometimes exploited, duped and overcharged $500 for the simplest Satyanarayan Puja Ritual. It is possible that people are afraid of being duped, which is why they look for YouTube tutorials on how to perform pujas. In India, firecrackers were lit during Diwali celebrations. They stopped using firecrackers due to more strict environmental laws. Indians continue to request permission from their local police chiefs, despite this, to use firecrackers as part of their festival. Some American companies allow their Hindu workers to take a religious holiday and enjoy a generous leave of absence.

Diwali in America does not just take place within Indian-American settlements. There are some events that are more widely celebrated during festival season. Surati, an English-language non-profit group, staged a Ramayana directed by Rimliroy last October 20. Hum Sub is another non-profit in North Carolina that hosts the largest Diwali festival in the area. Many locals as well as Indian celebrities will perform for festival-goers. The festival was held in October this year and approximately 15,000 people attended, including Indian singers Sadhana Sagam and Amit Sna from Indian Idol.

Diwali celebrated in October is because November is too cold to hold an outdoor festival and it’s hard to find a theatre that can accommodate so many.
